December News and Happenings

Season’s Greetings to all!

Ending the year on a high note –

2016 marked our 10th anniversary. It was an inspiring year, filled with exciting musical happenings! As the year draws to a close, we wish to thank you for your support of our music and entertainment services.

Our artists shined in their performances throughout the year – from stage appearances at music venues and restaurants to private performances for social celebrations and corporate events. Here are a few moments that made our year memorable:

  • We brought our entertainment and musical talent to many exciting returning events – and new ones.
  • Expanded our collective’s musical collaborations to include talented local artists and additional instruments.
  • LB’s new Yanagisawa professional tenor sax brings his collaborative and solo performances to a new level.
  • Run live performances of original electro compositions by LB & MïxT BeatZ (incorporating Ableton Live, live instruments and field recording), at art and cultural events –  InLiquid v16 Benefit, Fleisher Art Memorial Founder’s Award , and private events.
  • Attended the CD Release Party in October for “For the Love of Germantown”, a Jazz project by Philadelphia Jazz Project in collaboration with Germantown United CDC that includes a track by Mélange Jazz Collective performing bassist Bert Harris’s original composition “Sunday Sermon on Mars.”
  • Played for a special wedding ceremony and cocktail hour at World Café Live at The Queen Wilmington. As all the elements of the wedding celebration came together – personalized music repertoire and performance by Mélange Jazz Collective Trio –  it was truly a wonderful and magical experience, musically and in every way.

High Notes for a Perfect Day: A Wedding Celebration

We recently had the pleasure to perform Live for the wedding ceremony and cocktail reception for a very delightful couple – and music lovers – at the iconic World Café Live at the Queen, in Wilmington World Cafe Live Wilmington

The first of our high notes featured our Jazz duet (bass, keyboard) who performed during the musical prelude as the first guests arrived and continued through the processional in the Olympia Room, beautifully illuminated by the glow of a late autumn sunset.

“It might be you”, a specially selected song performed solo on soprano sax marked the entrance and presentation of the bride. The lighting of the candles by the bride and groom followed as our keyboard soloist performed a creative arrangement of Beyoncé’s Ave Maria.

During the recessional, Mélange Jazz Trio performed a resounding “I can’t stop loving you”, by Kem, one of the couple’s favorite artist and song.

The cocktail reception was held on the Balcony where guests enjoyed the cool sounds of Mélange performing a mix of jazz, blues and reggae.

A DJ provided the entertainment during the reception that took place on the first floor.

It was an absolute pleasure to work closely with the bride and groom for over 6 months and to learn about their music preferences and about their vision for their wedding. Our close collaboration with them, with our talented versatile musicians, and our coordination with the venue helped make this occasion a very special and memorable day.

Mélange Jazz Collective’s artists:

Laurent Bass: saxophonist, performed solo and with trio.

Bert Harris: bass player, performed with duo and trio.

Walter Runge: keyboardist, performed solo, with duo and trio.

Philadelphia Jazz Project http://www.philajazzproject.org/ – Press Release:

Philadelphia is home to strong musical traditions like Jazz, Gospel, DooWop, R&B, Rock and Hip Hop. Our greatest strength has been the unexpected and wonderful blending and swirling of these traditions into new and fascinating musical creations. One place where this magic happens is Germantown. This community in the Northwestern region of Philadelphia was and continues to be a neighborhood rich in culture, history and diversity. Many renowned Philadelphia musicians, writers, visual artists, media makers and dancers grew up, or made their homes in Germantown.

In the Spring of 2016, Philadelphia Jazz Project (PJP) began a collaboration with Germantown United Community Development Corporation [GUCDC] and a group of talented Germantown musicians. The task: To record and produce a compelling CD, as a fundraiser for GUCDC. The goal: To celebrate the historical cultural strength and diversity of the Germantown community.

Three recording studios were used, including Boom Room Studios, Spice House Sound and Germantown’s Rittenhouse Soundworks.  PJP reached out to more than twenty musicians, vocalists and poets seeking participants for this project.

CD Release Party with Germantown United & Philadelphia Jazz Project, Sunday, October 30, 2016

The culminating CD, entitled, “For the Love of Germantown” and released on October 30th 2016, is a compilation of nine great Jazz, Blues and Soul performances of new and classic songs.

Event Services

LB Entertainment’s collective of talented, creative and professional musical artists will set the vibe to any party. From the sophisticated sounds of modern jazz at a private reception played by one of our jazz ensembles or a cocktail hour enhanced by electro inspired live music, we make it easy to entertain.

To help create flawless, innovative and enjoyable events is at the heart of LBE’s experience.

Checklist to consider before booking entertainment:

Music can make a big difference. It can create a special atmosphere; set the tone and elevate the feel of an event; strengthen connections to each other and make the occasion more pleasurable and memorable. And, choosing the right music is as important as selecting the right location or venue, as guests will remember the experience. Here are six factors you should consider and research prior to selecting and booking entertainment:

What is the theme and purpose of the event?

Where will the event be located (landmark building, hotel, tent, convention center, music venue, etc.) and what are the logistics of the venue sound-wise and visually?

What type of entertainment will enhance your concept?

What is the audience demographic?

Will there be any speeches?

What is the budget allocated for entertainment?

Gathering these elements will help visualize the overall event and help determine how music will fit into it.

The holiday season is around the corner. Make your holidays memorable!

JUNE – JULY NEWS & HAPPENINGS

Summer greetings from all of us at LB Entertainment!

Summer is in full swing and Philadelphia summer scene is more vibrant than ever – from recreational to cultural happenings to The 2016 National Democratic Convention.

 PROJECTS

Summer is the perfect time to pursue new music projects – or finish some. For Laurent, creating his own authentic and unique samplings for his electronic music compositions has been one of his special summer projects.

Capturing nature’s sounds through field recording – Today’s audience is seeking different listening experience and artists are seeking to create their own authentic mix of samples – by merging processed field recordings with synthesizer improvisations.

Our recent trips to Acadia Natural Park in Maine and to Cape May provided the perfect landscape for our field recording project…. the inspiring beauty of the Park and its trails, the sound of waves crushing on the coast or along the shore in Cape May.

MAY NEWS AND HAPPENINGS

Happy summer!

Summertime is the perfect time to add live music to many occasions and capture the feeling of the season. Summer music is upbeat, yet laid-back. Whether it’s a special gathering and celebration with friends and family,  a poolside party, a garden party or a cultural event, music will make your event more pleasurable and memorable. Enhancing a summer party experience can be as simple as adding one of our versatile jazz combos or electro performances.

Stage Gear for solo performances:  Making a sound impression

To be able to continuously monitor entertainment and production quality during live performance requires an assortment of equipment for the solo performer.

A solo performer needs to use a system that is technically fully reliable and provides ease of portability, fast setup, simple operation, and is adaptable for expandability.  In his solo electro-acoustic performances with LB Jazz +One and MïxT Beatz, multi-instrumentalist Laurent Bass uses a powerful compact and minimal set up that incorporates state-of-the art stage gear and some of the latest technology in order to create high quality sound and stage performances.

Our solo set up is designed to perform in many applications, from small intimate receptions to large stage performances.

April News and Happenings

APRIL NEWS AND HAPPENINGS

Welcome to our latest news updates and ongoing conversations about our music, projects, entertainment and Philadelphia Jazz scene! Find out more about Mélange Jazz Collective’s musical sound, track recording, our upcoming performances, previews and where to find some of the best Jazz spots across the city.

Mélange Jazz Collective – Exploration and creation of musical sounds

Mélange Jazz Collective’s distinctive sound fuses different musical styles and backgrounds as varied as Jazz, blues, Latin, reggae, funk, new music, gospel, world. Music groups form for a variety of reasons – musical relationships, friendships and desire to perform together – but the group’s sound grows out of an agreement, explicit or tacit, among the members about a collective’s musical strategy or direction, and an acceptable musical outcome – and where the sound of the group is greater than the sum of its parts. Members of Mélange Jazz Collective have performed together for over 10 years and have collaborated on several music projects for many years.  Their unique sound is the result of a long creative journey together that keeps developing.  Mélange’s cohesive sound reflects the collective’s close musical collaboration, history, group dynamics, improvisation, where each member expresses his individual voice and strives to engage the others to create a unified sonic texture.

“The joy of performing lies in the unexpected discovery of a new way of interpreting a tune, or in experiencing a spontaneous interaction between group members in the course of the performance that might take the tune in an unusual direction. Ultimately, a collective, informed and inspired improvisational experience might actually be considered even more successful if it leads into a kind of spontaneous musical arrangement, albeit one that is fleeting and unrepeatable. Progress might be measured by an ever-increasing number of these “arrangements” as we continue to perform together”. Steve Strawitz, Mélange Jazz Collective’s guitarist/violinist.

Recording Session for Germantown Recording Sessions Project

Mélange Jazz Collective Quartet recently recorded a great new original composition “Sunday Sermon on Mars” written by Mélange’s bassist Bert Harris.

Bassist: Bert Harris

Saxophonist: Laurent Bass

Guitarist: Steve Strawitz

Drummer: Kimpedro Rodriguez

“This is a project stemming from jazz musicians who are located in the Germantown area or who have roots in the Germantown area. It is a homage to those musicians. The tune we recorded “Sunday Sermon on Mars” is an homage to Sun Ra who lived in Germantown for decades and the Sun Ra Arkestra still has its roots there.” Bert Harris

The recording is part of the Germantown Recording Sessions. The greatly anticipated cd will include a number of musical artists from Philadelphia and will be released in the fall.

Preview upcoming performance at Fleisher Memorial

We are honored to be invited to attend and perform for Fleisher Memorial 27th Founder’s Award Celebration with the sound of LB’s solo electro-acoustic jazz act, MïxT BeatZ.

27th Founder’s Award Celebration

http://fleisher.org/event/27th-founders-award-celebration/

On Friday, June 3, 2016, Fleisher supporters, faculty, students, and friends will present Dr. Dennis W. Creedon with the 27th annual Founder’s Award.

The Founder’s Award recognizes individuals whose significant commitment to providing access to the arts, promoting excellence in creative expression, and enriching Philadelphia’s cultural resources reflects the values of our founder, Samuel S. Fleisher.

Purchase tickets to the celebration or make a sponsorship gift …

About the recipient:
Dr. Dennis W. Creedon is Superintendent of New York’s Mahopac Central School District. Previously, he was an Assistant Superintendent and Deputy Chief Academic Officer in the School District of Philadelphia, where he oversaw the Office of Academic Enrichment and Support. For 10 years, Dr. Creedon was the Director of the Central Office of Arts Education.

As a classroom teacher, he developed the award winning literacy-based Sounds of Learning program for Opera Philadelphia, which led to his special assignment at the opera for 10 years. The program celebrated its 24th year in 2015. In recognition for his work with the Opera, Dr. Creedon received the Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Superintendent of the Schools and the President of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers.

Dr. Creedon was the lead investigator of a successful four-year 1.2 million dollar U.S. Department of Education grant to study the impact of arts integration on literacy development. The study realized a 13 to 21% gain in proficient and advanced scores in reading in the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment for the treatment schools as compared to the control schools. In addition, there was a statistically significant reduction in absenteeism and suspensions among boys in the treatment schools.

Dr. Creedon has presented at local, state, and national conferences on integrative arts pedagogy, stress management, assessment theory, empowering at-risk students, and literacy issues. In 2014, Education Week identified him as a national “Leader to Learn From.”
