MAY NEWS AND HAPPENINGS

Happy summer!

Summertime is the perfect time to add live music to many occasions and capture the feeling of the season. Summer music is upbeat, yet laid-back. Whether it’s a special gathering and celebration with friends and family,  a poolside party, a garden party or a cultural event, music will make your event more pleasurable and memorable. Enhancing a summer party experience can be as simple as adding one of our versatile jazz combos or electro performances.

Stage Gear for solo performances:  Making a sound impression

To be able to continuously monitor entertainment and production quality during live performance requires an assortment of equipment for the solo performer.

A solo performer needs to use a system that is technically fully reliable and provides ease of portability, fast setup, simple operation, and is adaptable for expandability.  In his solo electro-acoustic performances with LB Jazz +One and MïxT Beatz, multi-instrumentalist Laurent Bass uses a powerful compact and minimal set up that incorporates state-of-the art stage gear and some of the latest technology in order to create high quality sound and stage performances.

Our solo set up is designed to perform in many applications, from small intimate receptions to large stage performances.

April News and Happenings

APRIL NEWS AND HAPPENINGS

Welcome to our latest news updates and ongoing conversations about our music, projects, entertainment and Philadelphia Jazz scene! Find out more about Mélange Jazz Collective’s musical sound, track recording, our upcoming performances, previews and where to find some of the best Jazz spots across the city.

Mélange Jazz Collective – Exploration and creation of musical sounds

Mélange Jazz Collective’s distinctive sound fuses different musical styles and backgrounds as varied as Jazz, blues, Latin, reggae, funk, new music, gospel, world. Music groups form for a variety of reasons – musical relationships, friendships and desire to perform together – but the group’s sound grows out of an agreement, explicit or tacit, among the members about a collective’s musical strategy or direction, and an acceptable musical outcome – and where the sound of the group is greater than the sum of its parts. Members of Mélange Jazz Collective have performed together for over 10 years and have collaborated on several music projects for many years.  Their unique sound is the result of a long creative journey together that keeps developing.  Mélange’s cohesive sound reflects the collective’s close musical collaboration, history, group dynamics, improvisation, where each member expresses his individual voice and strives to engage the others to create a unified sonic texture.

“The joy of performing lies in the unexpected discovery of a new way of interpreting a tune, or in experiencing a spontaneous interaction between group members in the course of the performance that might take the tune in an unusual direction. Ultimately, a collective, informed and inspired improvisational experience might actually be considered even more successful if it leads into a kind of spontaneous musical arrangement, albeit one that is fleeting and unrepeatable. Progress might be measured by an ever-increasing number of these “arrangements” as we continue to perform together”. Steve Strawitz, Mélange Jazz Collective’s guitarist/violinist.

Recording Session for Germantown Recording Sessions Project

Mélange Jazz Collective Quartet recently recorded a great new original composition “Sunday Sermon on Mars” written by Mélange’s bassist Bert Harris.

Bassist: Bert Harris

Saxophonist: Laurent Bass

Guitarist: Steve Strawitz

Drummer: Kimpedro Rodriguez

“This is a project stemming from jazz musicians who are located in the Germantown area or who have roots in the Germantown area. It is a homage to those musicians. The tune we recorded “Sunday Sermon on Mars” is an homage to Sun Ra who lived in Germantown for decades and the Sun Ra Arkestra still has its roots there.” Bert Harris

The recording is part of the Germantown Recording Sessions. The greatly anticipated cd will include a number of musical artists from Philadelphia and will be released in the fall.

Preview upcoming performance at Fleisher Memorial

We are honored to be invited to attend and perform for Fleisher Memorial 27th Founder’s Award Celebration with the sound of LB’s solo electro-acoustic jazz act, MïxT BeatZ.

27th Founder’s Award Celebration

http://fleisher.org/event/27th-founders-award-celebration/

On Friday, June 3, 2016, Fleisher supporters, faculty, students, and friends will present Dr. Dennis W. Creedon with the 27th annual Founder’s Award.

The Founder’s Award recognizes individuals whose significant commitment to providing access to the arts, promoting excellence in creative expression, and enriching Philadelphia’s cultural resources reflects the values of our founder, Samuel S. Fleisher.

Purchase tickets to the celebration or make a sponsorship gift …

About the recipient:
Dr. Dennis W. Creedon is Superintendent of New York’s Mahopac Central School District. Previously, he was an Assistant Superintendent and Deputy Chief Academic Officer in the School District of Philadelphia, where he oversaw the Office of Academic Enrichment and Support. For 10 years, Dr. Creedon was the Director of the Central Office of Arts Education.

As a classroom teacher, he developed the award winning literacy-based Sounds of Learning program for Opera Philadelphia, which led to his special assignment at the opera for 10 years. The program celebrated its 24th year in 2015. In recognition for his work with the Opera, Dr. Creedon received the Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Superintendent of the Schools and the President of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers.

Dr. Creedon was the lead investigator of a successful four-year 1.2 million dollar U.S. Department of Education grant to study the impact of arts integration on literacy development. The study realized a 13 to 21% gain in proficient and advanced scores in reading in the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment for the treatment schools as compared to the control schools. In addition, there was a statistically significant reduction in absenteeism and suspensions among boys in the treatment schools.

Dr. Creedon has presented at local, state, and national conferences on integrative arts pedagogy, stress management, assessment theory, empowering at-risk students, and literacy issues. In 2014, Education Week identified him as a national “Leader to Learn From.”

Music Trends

Trends in 2016 music entertainment suggest that there is a greater desire for Live music either in distinct genres, or in electronic music – by integrating more live elements. June – July News 2015

Hello Friends,
Greetings and Happy summer!

Happenings

Laurent and I just returned from spending some time on the shores of Lake of Geneva (Lac Léman) – fully refreshed and replenished by the beauty and serenity of the shores of the lake and its surroundings.

The area – and all over Europe – enjoys a vibrant summer musical and cultural scene that features many local and international artists. Festivals and concerts in all music genres, theater, dance, art exhibitions abound in summertime, from Jazz à Vienne (www.jazzavienne.com) , to Jazz in Marciac (www.jazzinmarciac.com , Festival d’Avignon (www.festival-avignon.com/en , Paléo Festival in Nyon (www.paleo.ch) to The Montreux jazz Festival (www.montreuxjazzfestival.com), and many more local happenings with talented line-ups and creative performances.

The area borders with Switzerland, France, Italy and is near Germany. It is a great hub to meet artists and music lovers and develop a global dialog about music and art, evaluate cultural trends and explore future opportunities and collaboration.

LB Interview with Marquix Global Network

Here is some great press on Laurent’s interview and expression on his artistic statement and musical vision which he recently received from Marquix Global Network. http://www.marquix.tv/features/laurent-lb-bass.html

Laurent LB Bass’s new single ‘Feelin’ Good’ welds virtuoso saxophone and harmonica performances to an electro-style drum-bass framework, and the result is one of the grooviest instrumentals of the year.

What do you get when you deeply endow a single person with the often dissonant qualities of loyalty and individuality? Laurent Bass is a product of that hybrid design and the result shows in the rich originality of his electro-enhanced jazz creations. He is a lifelong musician with varied work in a half-dozen performance configurations and his competent adherence to the stylistic traditions of jazz – when he is formally exercising that genre – give him the sort of artistic and technical credibility that completely eludes most younger artists. The man is a virtuoso with several instruments. Check out the soulfully rendered blue notes that ornament his mouth harp stylings on ‘Feelin’ Good’. On the other hand, when his maverick aspect is ascendent the Harvard-educated multi-instrumentalist is capable of walking all over tradition to deliver an entirely new kind of sound experience. Independent reporter Lily Clark recently caught up with the talented musician to talk about his history, his music and his plans for the future.

LILY: When did you first discover your love of music?
LAURENT LB BASS: I discovered my love for music and performance very early when I attended my first live school sponsored student musical event. I listened to musicians playing live music for the first time and I was captivated. The performance featured the Elementary School Orchestra and was staged for the school and parents. It was sublime. I knew from that moment it was what I wanted to do. Now to the parents it sounded like… um, very young students. It’s all in your perspective!

LILY: Your song ‘Feelin’ Good’ is receiving a positive listener response on radio. What was your initial reaction when you first heard your song playing on radio?
LAURENT LB BASS: I was proud and enthralled to hear my piece ‘Feelin’ Good’ on the radio. It validated my effort, and knowing that it would be heard by listeners worldwide was exhilarating.

LILY: What was the inspiration behind your debut radio single?
LAURENT LB BASS: Much of the inspiration for this tune comes from my musical experience with old gospel songs and hymns, and my desire to construct and combine interesting beats and live instruments with modern chord progressions. I wanted to incorporate my jazz experience with gospel and folk music, augmented with harmonica, sax and percussion. Things take on a life of their own.

LILY: Would you say that the mood of your other songs is in the same vein as ‘Feelin’ Good’?
LAURENT LB BASS: My other songs take inspiration from many different creative areas. They have individual characters that develop from varied sources and musical experiences including classical, cabaret musicals, jazz, Latin, to world music.

LILY: How would you characterize yourself as an artist/musician? (Ex. Down-to-earth, serious, fun-loving…)
LAURENT LB BASS: Art should be enriching and enjoyable. But it also needs to aspire to exceptionality of some kind. If I do not hear that in music then it is not pleasing to me. I personally strive to practice, rehearse and persist until I reach a level of quality that is enjoyable to me and (hopefully) to my audience and friends as well.

LILY: Did you come from a musical background? Are there other musicians in your family?
LAURENT LB BASS My mother was a church pianist. She had classical musical training and a love for live performance. She always desired for me to have musical training through school and I took advantage of it.

LILY: What do you find most rewarding about being an artist? What do you find most challenging?
LAURENT LB BASS: The most rewarding part of being an artist is the appreciation I sense when I use my performance ability. Performing with skill to create music that brings and shares happiness, peace and harmony to the world is intensely rewarding. This is an experience that will grow with me throughout my lifetime. The challenge is to learn and change with it.

LILY: Who are your role models in music?
LAURENT LB BASS: I have many role models which start with the great early jazz players who created a whole new genre of music, such as Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Stanley Turrentine, Herbie Hancock, Eddie Harris, Pharaoh Sanders, Mongo Santamaria… just to name a few. On the Latin side, there is Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, El Gran Combo, Cal Tjader. In the new world, I am influenced by Pat Metheny, Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Nile Rodgers, Nils Petter Movaer, dZihan & Kamien and Thievery Corporation. My journey would not be possible without the expertise and guidance of my music mentors and teachers.

LILY: Describe your best or most memorable performances. (Take Your Pick 1 or 2)
LAURENT LB BASS: In Liquid Benefit v.15 Crane Arts, Feb 7th, 2015. InLiquid is an organization committed to creating opportunities and exposure for visual artists while serving as a free, online public hub for arts information in the Philadelphia area. I was a featured artist performing Live with my setup, MïxT BeatZ, using Albeton Live with Keith McMillen Soft Step 2 Peddle to drive Live Beats with Live Saxophone Performance. This was a single performance where I creatively performed original tracks that were mapped out using a controller for live production. This was very experimental and the response was great. There were more than five hundred people attending this performance. I also performed with my first professional group (‘First Choice’) while in college. It was an American girl group vocal music trio from Philadelphia. The group produced the Soul/disco hit ‘Armed and Extremely Dangerous.’ My most memorable performance took place at The Academy of Music in Philadelphia as backup to The First Choice. The significance of that performance lies in the fact that as a child I stood on the stage of the Academy of Music after a concert finished. I wanted to perform there ever since. The First Choice performance was my first chance to be on that particular stage, which made it a very memorable experience.

LILY: Do you have a music video for your hit single? If so, what can you tell us about it?
LAURENT LB BASS: A music video will be produced and released later this year.

LILY: What advice would you give to young, aspiring artists out there who are unsure and need guidance?
LAURENT LB BASS: Every person knows on some level what a quality song sounds like. When we first start performing or producing the results are far from that standard and the creative process becomes very frustrating and discouraging. The key is to persist and persevere. The quality will eventually appear if one endures – without giving up as others will!

LILY: What’s next for you as an artist? Is there a new single in the works? If so, what can you tell us about it?
LAURENT LB BASS: Next on the horizon is a new album for my electro-acoustic project that will combine electro house and EDM with live instruments and vocals – plus cool ‘back beats’ and driving rhythms. My vision is to use the concept of melodious cool chord progressions to produce new original musical compositions. Using the current software-driven performance environments I can combine real-time mix tracks, beats, harmonies and melodies that result in exciting live performances. This way the music becomes the essential focus of the performance, along with great live musicianship.

LILY: Thank you kindly for taking the time to share your history and ambitions with us, LB. We wish you every good fortune in the coming days as your music spreads farther from home.

LB IN DUBSPOT’S APRIL STUDENT SPOTLIGHT –

Laurent was featured in April 2015 Dubspot student spotlight. Dubspot, where Laurent received his Ableton Live Producer’s Certif.,  is the premier electronic music and DJ school in the world, with courses available in New York City, Los Angeles and online. http://blog.dubspot.com/dubspot-student-spotlight-april-2015/

“In our April 2015 Dubspot Student Spotlight, we highlight some remarkable artists and producers who have recently taken courses at Dubspot NYC, LA and Online. Get to know Cammar, Hakuu, LB Laurent Bass, PLAYÄ, and Corporeal!”

LB Laurent Bass // Philadelphia, PA, US

Multi-instrumentalist, music producer, composer, educator and partner at LB Entertainment, Laurent Bass is at the vanguard of solo live entertainment in electro performances and is an active member of the Philadelphia Jazz collective.

A native of Philadelphia, Laurent performs on tenor, alto and soprano sax, clarinet, flute, blues harmonica, Ableton Live, and has an extensive background in Jazz, Latin, World, Nu Jazz, classical music and electronic music production. His original compositions reflect his wide musical background and he was recently awarded The Akademia Music Award for Best Song Funk/Jazz for his composition, Feelin’ Good.

Laurent is recognized in the music and events circle for his creative electro acoustic jazz solo performances with LB Jazz +One and Mïxt BeaTz, in which he integrates live performances on soprano and tenor sax with electronic elements using Ableton Live. He is co-founder of the band Mélange Jazz Collective and performs as its lead saxophonist, clarinetist and flutist. He has collaborated with several Jazz, Latin and World bands and his musical pursuits have taken him all over the East Coast at live events including the Kimmel Center, The Mellon Jazz Festival, Penn’s Landing Music Festival, World Café Live, The Painted Bride, in Philadelphia,  The Bethlehem Music Festival, the Annual SoNoArts Celebration in So. Norwalk, CT, and at some European events.

Laurent received Dubspot Online Ableton Live Producer Certificate  in April 2014 from Dubspot in New York. He studied extensively with composer, alto saxophonist and Jazz innovator, Bobby Zankel, with clarinetist and saxophonist Norman David, and with flutist Dr. Cynthia Folio. He recently attended Buster Williams School of Music and completed their Summer Jazz Intensive program.

Laurent received his Ed.M from Harvard Graduate School of Education and his B.A. from Temple University.

Influencers: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Sony Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Stanley Turrentine, Nile Rodgers, Pat Metheny, Nils Petter Movaer, Thievery Corporation.

Why I chose Dubspot:

I was searching for a way to combine my live band performance experience with new electronic music environment.  I was approaching this goal from a musician’s perspective. My search led me to Ableton Live as it offers a unique electronic music environment that combines easily with musicians’ tools, effects and features – which I did not find in other environments.

Dubspot’s comprehensive curriculum in electronic music production and systematic approach to teaching offer fundamental concepts needed to construct current electronic compositions, i.e.:

•        Subtractive and FM Modulation synthesis.
•        Digital MIDI and analog audio recording.
•        Sampling.
•        MIDI & audio effects.
•        Composition construction and arrangements.

Dubspot’s program and Ableton Live have helped me bring my musical performances and electronic music production to the next level, and further my career as a musician and electronic music producer.” – LB Laurent Bass
